ARACOMA ALMA MINE MEMORIAL

.png)

The incident known as the Aracoma Alma Mine accident occurred as a result of a conveyor belt catching fire within the confines of the Aracoma Alma Mine No. 1 located in Melville, Logan County, West Virginia. The fire began on the morning of January 19, 2006, releasing smoke into the fresh air passageway designated for miners' escape routes, thereby obstructing their visibility. Tragically, this led to the loss of two miners' lives. Ellery Hatfield, aged 47, and Don Bragg, aged 33, succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning after being separated from the rest of their crew, resulting in their fatalities.
In the Heart of Coal:
A Tribute to Ellery Hatfield and Don Bragg

In the depths where darkness dwells,
Two souls brave in coal's embrace,
Ellery and Don, their stories tell,
In Aracoma's somber space.

With steadfast hearts, they toiled on,
Through shafts where dangers silently lay,
Their spirits strong, their wills unbroken,
In Alma Mine's unforgiving sway.

Now rest in peace, brave miners dear,
Your legacy forever shines,
In Logan's hills, your memory clear,
In every heart, your light aligns.
